Overview of La Crosse County, Wisconsin

La Crosse County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 107,120. Its county seat is La Crosse. The United States Census Bureau’s La Crosse Metropolitan Statistical Area includes all of La Crosse County (as well as Houston County, Minnesota to the west).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,243 km² (480 mi²). 1,173 km² (453 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.66% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 107,120 people, 41,599 households, and 25,583 families residing in the county. The population density is 91/km² (237/mi²). There are 43,479 housing units at an average density of 37/km² (96/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.18% White, 0.95% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 3.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 41,599 households out of which 29.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.50% are non-families. 28.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 15.60% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 94.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.
