Taylor County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 16,089. Its county seat is Grafton.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 455 km² (176 mi²). 448 km² (173 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.66% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,089 people, 6,320 households, and 4,487 families residing in the county. The population density is 36/km² (93/mi²). There are 7,125 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.07% White, 0.83% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,320 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 10.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
