Lancaster County is a county located on the Northern Neck in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 11,567. Its county seat is Lancaster.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 599 km² (231 mi²). 345 km² (133 mi²) of it is land and 254 km² (98 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.45% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 11,567 people, 5,004 households, and 3,412 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (87/mi²). There are 6,498 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (49/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.95% White, 28.88% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,004 households out of which 21.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.80% are non-families. 28.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
