Highland County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 2,536. Its county seat is Monterey.
History
The county was formed in 1847 from Bath County and Pendleton County. It was named for its lofty elevation.
The Battle of McDowell, part of Stonewall Jackson’s Shenandoah Valley campaign, took place here May 8, 1862.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,077 km² (416 mi²). 1,077 km² (416 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.00% water.

There are 1,822 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.25% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,131 households out of which 24.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 29.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.74.
In the county, the population is spread out with 19.90% under the age of 18, 4.10% from 18 to 24, 24.50% from 25 to 44, 31.20% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older.
