The area was first settled in 1846 by German immigrants who named it after their leader Johann Adolph Van Vleck. The town was officially established in 1895 when it was granted a post office. During the early 1900s, Van Vleck experienced rapid growth as oil fields were discovered nearby. This period saw a lot of development in the town including new roads and businesses such as banks and general stores.

Politically, Van Vleck has long been a Republican stronghold with most voters supporting conservative candidates from the GOP party.
