Wilbarger County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 14,676. Its county seat is Vernon. Wilbarger is named for Josiah Pugh Wilbarger and Mathias Wilbarger, two early settlers.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,533 km² (978 mi²). 2,515 km² (971 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

There are 5,537 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.07.
