Rains County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 9,139. Its county seat is Emory. The county is named for Emory Rains, a Texas state legislator.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 670 km² (259 mi²). 601 km² (232 mi²) of it is land and 69 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.36% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 9,139 people, 3,617 households, and 2,680 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.91% White, 2.92% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.55% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. 5.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,617 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.90% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.92.
