Motley County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 1,426. Its county seat is Matador. Motley County is named for Junius William Mottley, a physician, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, who died in the Battle of San Jacinto. The reason the county name differs is due to the fact that the bill creating the county misspelled Mottley’s name.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,564 km² (990 mi²). 2,562 km² (989 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.
