Mitchell County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 9,698. The county is named for Asa Mitchell and Eli Mitchell, two early settlers and soldiers in the Texas Revolution.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,372 km2 (916 mi2). 2,357 km2 (910 mi2) of it is land and 15 km2 (6 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.

There are 2,837 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 19.80% under the age of 18, 11.50% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
