Overview of Marion County, Texas

Marion County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 10,941. Its county seat is Jefferson. Marion county is located in East Texas and is named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War general who was nicknamed the “Swamp Fox”.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,089 km² (420 mi²). 987 km² (381 mi²) of it is land and 101 km² (39 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.31% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,941 people, 4,610 households, and 3,120 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 6,384 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.74% White, 23.91% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.79% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 2.40% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,610 households out of which 24.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.70% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.30% are non-families. 28.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.30% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 28.40% from 45 to 64, and 19.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 95.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.
