Overview of Hale County, Texas
Hale County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 36,602. Its county seat is Plainview. The county was organized in 1888, and is named for Lt. John C. Hale, a hero of the Battle of San Jacinto.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,602 km² (1,005 mi²). 2,602 km² (1,005 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.01% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 36,602 people, 11,975 households, and 9,136 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 13,526 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.77% White, 5.79% Black or African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 23.76% from other races, and 2.42% from two or more races. 47.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,975 households out of which 40.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.30% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.70% are non-families. 21.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.32.
In the county, the population is spread out with 30.20% under the age of 18, 11.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
