Overview of Collin County, Texas

Collin County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 491,675. Its county seat is McKinney. This county is part of the Metroplex and lies just north of Dallas County.

The primary cities in this fast growing county are McKinney, Plano, Allen, Frisco, and a small part of Dallas. Collin County, and its county seat of McKinney, are named after Collin McKinney, one of the five men who drafted the Texas Declaration of Independence and the oldest of the 59 men who signed it.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,294 km² (886 mi²). 2,195 km² (848 mi²) of it is land and 99 km² (38 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 491,675 people, 181,970 households, and 132,292 families residing in the county. The population density is 224/km² (580/mi²). There are 194,892 housing units at an average density of 89/km² (230/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.39% White, 4.79% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 6.92% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 4.26% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 10.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 181,970 households out of which 40.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.10% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the county, the population is spread out with 28.70% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 37.90% from 25 to 44, 20.70% from 45 to 64, and 5.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $70,835, and the median income for a family is $81,856. Males have a median income of $57,392 versus $36,604 for females. The per capita income for the county is $33,345. 4.90% of the population and 3.30% of families are below the poverty line.
