Camp County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 11,549. Its county seat is Pittsburg. Camp is named for John Lafayette Camp, a Texas politician.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 526 km² (203 mi²). 512 km² (198 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.80% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,549 people, 4,336 households, and 3,156 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (58/mi²). There are 5,228 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.53% White, 19.20% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 9.63% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 14.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,336 households out of which 31.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 12.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.30% who are 65 years of age or older.
