Burnet County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 34,147. Its county seat is Burnet. Burnet is named for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first president of the Republic of Texas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,644 km² (1,021 mi²). 2,580 km² (996 mi²) of it is land and 65 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.44% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 34,147 people, 13,133 households, and 9,665 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (34/mi²). There are 15,933 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.64% White, 1.52% Black or African American, 0.68% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.24% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 14.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,133 households out of which 30.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.50% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
