Brazos County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 152,415. Its county seat is Bryan. Brazos is named for the Brazos River, along with Brazoria County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,529 km² (590 mi²). 1,517 km² (586 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 152,415 people, 55,202 households, and 30,416 families residing in the county. The population density is 100/km² (260/mi²). There are 59,023 housing units at an average density of 39/km² (101/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.45% White, 10.72% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 4.01% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.42% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. 17.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 55,202 households out of which 27.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.30% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.90% are non-families. 25.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.50% under the age of 18, 32.00% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 13.80% from 45 to 64, and 6.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.30 males.
