Overview of Bandera County, Texas

Bandera County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 17,645. Its county seat is Bandera. Bandera is named for the Spanish word for flag. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,066 km² (798 mi²). 2,051 km² (792 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,645 people, 7,010 households, and 5,061 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (22/mi²). There are 9,503 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.02% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.55% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. 13.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,010 households out of which 29.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 27.60% from 45 to 64, and 16.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.30 males.
