Maury County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 69,498. Its county seat is Columbia.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,594 km² (616 mi²). 1,587 km² (613 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 69,498 people, 26,444 households, and 19,277 families residing in the county. The population density is 44/km² (113/mi²). There are 28,674 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (47/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.39% White, 14.25% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 3.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 26,444 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
