Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 44,294. Its county seat is Dandridge.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 814 km² (314 mi²). 709 km² (274 mi²) of it is land and 105 km² (41 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.89% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 44,294 people, 17,155 households, and 12,608 families residing in the county. The population density is 62/km² (162/mi²). There are 19,319 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (71/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.66% White, 2.32% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,155 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.90% are married couples living together, 9.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.50% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.90% under the age of 18, 10.60% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.
