Dickson County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 43,156. Its county seat is Charlotte. Its largest city is Dickson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,272 km² (491 mi²). 1,269 km² (490 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 43,156 people, 16,473 households, and 12,173 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (88/mi²). There are 17,614 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.25% White, 4.58% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 1.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,473 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 22.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.
