Dillon County is a county located in the state of South Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 30,722. Its county seat is Dillon.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,053 km² (407 mi²). 1,049 km² (405 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 30,722 people, 11,199 households, and 8,063 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 12,679 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 50.39% White, 45.35% Black or African American, 2.21% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.99% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,199 households out of which 34.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.80% are married couples living together, 22.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the county, the population is spread out with 29.10% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
