The increased amount of blood circulating in your body can have unexpected effects – for example, increased sex drive.

The fetus is about 16 inches long in week 16, easy to remember.

Hopefully you will now start to feel more alert, less tired than at the beginning of pregnancy. Women who have given birth to a baby earlier may notice that the baby is already moving in the stomach. It can feel like an annoyance, or like a little fish splashing around.

Between the fourth and seventh months, the sex drive usually increases in some women. This may be due to more blood circulating in the body – your heart pumps 20 percent more blood than normal. The increased blood volume makes the genitals extra sensitive to stimulation.

For others, sex life does not work at all. However, the need for closeness is usually as great as before, or even greater.

The fetus is now about 16 inches long and weighs about 100 grams. It can seize around, wrinkle your forehead, swallow amniotic fluid.
The water in it acts as an effective shock absorber if the stomach strikes, or if you fall. The amniotic fluid is replaced several times a day, which is necessary since the fetus usually pee every hour.

Matnoja in pregnancy – picas syndrome

In fact, there is a medical name for pregnant women’s matnoja or sudden need to put aside special, sometimes “inedible” things: Picas syndrome.

The Picas syndrome can be a sign that the body needs, for example, iron, zinc or lime. The word “pica” is, moreover, the same which gives the cat its Latin name, with the meaning “snapped to it”, roughly.

Hanna Bonnevier has worked as a nutritionist at the Karolinska Institutet’s Department of Public Health, and has among other things produced information material for pregnant women:

– To some extent it may be that the body feels what we need, and that we can be consciously sucked on it. It has also been seen that the intestine absorbs more than normal calcium for example during pregnancy. This is because we then need extra much of that particular nutrient.

Mineral deficiencies were more common in the past, today not many people feel that they have to chop on the house knot or taste the soil in the discount.

– Today’s women eat a balanced diet and get most of the important substances through the food.

Sudden cravings after eating certain things are most common during the first half of pregnancy. However, some women feel this throughout the period.

Take it easy with the coffee

An increased sensitivity to fluctuations in blood sugar levels can give extra cravings for sweets, fruits or anything else sweet.

But what makes so many suck on liquorice? There is no scientific explanation, but many women eat lots of sweets during pregnancy. Sweet and sour and salty, these are things that can dampen a bodily unease or a slight nausea.

– But you should be a little cautious with salt brine, because really large amounts can cause elevated blood pressure in some sensitive people.

The National Food Agency recommends a maximum of 50 grams of licorice a day.

Although sometimes it seems that the body is not only talking about what we should try to get in us when we are pregnant, but also what we should avoid. Many pregnant women cannot tolerate coffee, only the smell can make them nauseous. Coffee and black tea contain caffeine, which in high doses can increase the risk of miscarriage.

The National Food Agency recommends that pregnant women not drink more than three cups of coffee per day (or six cups of black tea).

Food that is extraordinarily good for pregnant women

50 years ago, many expectant mothers received iron tablets and vitamins from their doctor. Today supplementation with folic acid is recommended. Lack of this type of vitamin B has been shown to increase the risk of spinal hernia in the early fetus.

Recently, Swedish researchers have shown that expectant mothers who eat vegetables every day give their children in their stomach improved protection against type 1 diabetes (the chronic variant of the disease). Among the less vegetable-interested mothers’ children, twice as many had an increased risk of diabetes at the age of five.

In such a study, however, it is far from certain that it is really the vegetables that do the trick. Eating a lot of fruit and vegetables is usually linked to a generally healthy lifestyle.

Useful oils, so-called omega-3 fats, are believed to be important, among other things, for brain development. For example, they are found in certain fish such as salmon and in rapeseed oil.

Studies also indicate that beneficial bacteria found in yogurt and other “stomach-friendly” drinks can prevent allergies in the unborn baby. It is not easy to keep track of all the nutrients, but eating varied is never wrong!

Pregnancy is often seen as a permissive condition where you can get away with what you are feeling. And that’s okay, as long as there aren’t too many useless things like sweets, cakes and snacks, most experts believe.

Regular meals and snacks are good – long food breaks give blood sugar drops that make us eat the wrong food, fast. Many small goals also cushion the nausea best.

How much more does a pregnant woman need to eat?

On average, so much extra food is needed per day:
Month 1-3: 1 fruit
Month 4-6: 1 moderate snack and 1 fruit
Month 7-9: 2 moderate snacks and 1 fruit
