Wells County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 5,102. Its county seat is Fessenden.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,343 km² (1,291 mi²). 3,293 km² (1,271 mi²) of it is land and 50 km² (19 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,102 people, 2,215 households, and 1,453 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 2,643 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.12% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.25% from two or more races. 0.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,215 households out of which 25.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 4.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.40% are non-families. 32.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 4.60% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 26.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,894, and the median income for a family is $39,284. Males have a median income of $27,277 versus $16,810 for females.
