Overview of Richland County, North Dakota

Richland County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 17,998. Its county seat is Wahpeton.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,744 km² (1,446 mi²). 3,721 km² (1,437 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,998 people, 6,885 households, and 4,427 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). There are 7,575 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.83% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 1.66% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,885 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.20% are married couples living together, 6.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.70% are non-families. 29.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 14.50% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 107.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,098, and the median income for a family is $45,484. Males have a median income of $30,829 versus $20,310 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,339. 10.40% of the population and 6.10% of families are below the poverty line.
