Burleigh County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 69,416. Its county seat is Bismarck.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,320 km² (1,668 mi²). 4,230 km² (1,633 mi²) of it is land and 91 km² (35 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 69,416 people, 27,670 households, and 18,206 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 29,003 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.03% White, 0.26% Black or African American, 3.28% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,670 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.70% under the age of 18, 11.00% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $41,309, and the median income for a family is $52,085. Males have a median income of $34,753 versus $22,473 for females.
