Overview of Surry County, North Carolina

Surry County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 71,219. Its county seat is Dobson.

History

The county was formed in 1771 from Rowan County. It was named for the county of Surrey in England, birthplace of William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771.

In 1777 parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee) were combined to form Wilkes County. In 1789 the eastern half of Surry County became Stokes County. In 1850 the half of the county’s remaining territory south of the Yadkin River became Yadkin County.

Law and government

Surry County is a member of the regional Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,393 km² (538 mi²). 1,390 km² (537 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 71,219 people, 28,408 households, and 20,482 families residing in the county. The population density is 51/km² (133/mi²). There are 31,033 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.40% White, 4.16% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.45% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 6.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,408 households out of which 30.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.40% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,046, and the median income for a family is $38,902. Males have a median income of $27,854 versus $20,556 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,722. 12.40% of the population and 9.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.00% of those under the age of 18 and 17.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
