Overview of Stanly County, North Carolina
Stanly County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 58,100. Its county seat is Albemarle.
History
The county was formed in 1841 from the part of Montgomery County west of the Pee Dee River. It was named for John Stanly of New Bern (1774-1834), who served several terms in the North Carolina House of Commons and two terms (1801-1803, 1809-1811) in the United States House of Representatives.

Stanly County is a member of the regional Centralina Council of Governments.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,047 km² (404 mi²). 1,023 km² (395 mi²) of it is land and 24 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.28% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 58,100 people, 22,223 households, and 16,156 families residing in the county. The population density is 57/km² (147/mi²). There are 24,582 housing units at an average density of 24/km² (62/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.67% White, 11.46% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 22,223 households out of which 32.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $36,898, and the median income for a family is $43,956. Males have a median income of $31,444 versus $21,585 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,825. 10.70% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.10% of those under the age of 18 and 10.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
