Randolph County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 130,454. Its county seat is Asheboro.

History

The county was formed in 1779 from Guilford County. It was named for Peyton Randolph, first president of the Continental Congress.

Law and government

Randolph County is a member of the regional Piedmont Triad Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,046 km² (790 mi²). 2,039 km² (787 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.33% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 130,454 people, 50,659 households, and 37,335 families residing in the county. The population density is 64/km² (166/mi²). There are 54,422 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (69/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.20% White, 5.63% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.01% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 6.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 50,659 households out of which 33.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 22.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 31.30% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,348, and the median income for a family is $44,369. Males have a median income of $30,575 versus $22,503 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,236. 9.10% of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line.
