Overview of Alexander County, North Carolina
Alexander County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 33,603. Its county seat is Taylorsville.
History
The county was formed in 1847 from parts of Caldwell County, Iredell County, and Wilkes County. It was named for William Julius Alexander of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons.

Alexander County is a member of the regional Western Piedmont Council of Governments.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 682 km² (263 mi²). 674 km² (260 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.12% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 33,603 people, 13,137 households, and 9,747 families residing in the county. The population density is 50/km² (129/mi²). There are 14,098 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.00% White, 4.63% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.34% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 2.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,137 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.50% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.80% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 31.10% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.70 males.
