Overview of Socorro County, New Mexico

Socorro County is a county located in the state of New Mexico, United States. As of 2000, the population is 18,078. The county seat is Socorro. Socorro was originally the name given to a Native American village (see: Pueblo Indians) by Don Juan de Oñate in 1598. Having received vitally needed food and assistance from the native population, Oñate named the pueblo Socorro (“succor” in English).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 17,220 km² (6,649 mi²). 17,214 km² (6,646 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,078 people, 6,675 households, and 4,492 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (3/mi²). There are 7,808 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.87% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 10.92% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 20.10% from other races, and 4.28% from two or more races. 48.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,675 households out of which 33.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.40% are married couples living together, 13.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 12.60% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 103.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $23,439, and the median income for a family is $29,544. Males have a median income of $28,490 versus $22,482 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,826. 31.70% of the population and 24.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.60% of those under the age of 18 and 24.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
