Overview of Grant County, New Mexico
Grant County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 31,002. Its county seat is Silver City.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,276 km² (3,968 mi²). 10,272 km² (3,966 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 31,002 people, 12,146 households, and 8,514 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 14,066 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.67% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 1.35% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 19.02% from other races, and 3.11% from two or more races. 48.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,146 households out of which 31.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.70% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.
