Thurston County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 7,171. Its county seat is Pender.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,026 km² (396 mi²). 1,020 km² (394 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,171 people, 2,255 households, and 1,725 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 2,467 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 45.77% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 52.03% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. 2.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,255 households out of which 40.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.60% are married couples living together, 19.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.50% are non-families. 21.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.14 and the average family size is 3.64.
