Sheridan County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 6,198. Its county seat is Rushville.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,397 km² (2,470 mi²). 6,322 km² (2,441 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,198 people, 2,549 households, and 1,728 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 3,013 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.11% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 9.23% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 2.08% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,549 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 8.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 29.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 22.90% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 21.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,484, and the median income for a family is $35,167. Males have a median income of $21,892 versus $18,423 for females.
