Sanders County is a county located in the state of Montana. As of 2000, the population is 10,227. Its county seat is Thompson Falls.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,226 km² (2,790 mi²). 7,154 km² (2,762 mi²) of it is land and 72 km² (28 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,227 people, 4,273 households, and 2,897 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 5,271 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.91% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 4.74% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 2.64% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,273 households out of which 26.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.86.
