Scott County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 40,422. Its county seat is Benton.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,103 km² (426 mi²). 1,090 km² (421 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.18% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 40,422 people, 15,626 households, and 11,219 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (96/mi²). There are 16,951 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.68% White, 10.50% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,626 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.60% are married couples living together, 13.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.20% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older.
