Smith County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 16,182. Its county seat is Raleigh.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,651 km² (637 mi²). 1,647 km² (636 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 16,182 people, 6,046 households, and 4,558 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 7,005 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.11% White, 23.11% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.35% from two or more races. 0.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,046 households out of which 35.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.60% are non-families. 23.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.13.
