Marshall County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 34,993. Its county seat is Holly Springs.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,838 km² (710 mi²). 1,829 km² (706 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 34,993 people, 12,163 households, and 9,110 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 13,252 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.37% White, 50.36% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,163 households out of which 34.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.60% are married couples living together, 20.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 22.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.19.
