Marion County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 25,595. Its county seat is Columbia.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,421 km² (549 mi²). 1,405 km² (542 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.14% water.


As of the census of 2000, there are 25,595 people, 9,336 households, and 6,880 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 10,395 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.96% White, 31.87% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,336 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 15.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.13.
