Covington County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 19,407. Its county seat is Collins.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,075 km² (415 mi²). 1,072 km² (414 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 19,407 people, 7,126 households, and 5,280 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (47/mi²). There are 8,083 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.42% White, 35.61% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,126 households out of which 36.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.50% are married couples living together, 17.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.16.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 9.60% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 21.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older.
