Overview of Amite County, Mississippi

Amite County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 13,599. It is named after the Amite River which is located in the county. The name is derived from the French “amiti”, meaning “friendiness.” Its county seat is Liberty.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,895 km² (732 mi²). 1,890 km² (730 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,599 people, 5,271 households, and 3,879 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 6,446 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.42% White, 42.65% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,271 households out of which 31.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 16.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $26,033, and the median income for a family is $31,256. Males have a median income of $28,306 versus $16,173 for females.
