Swift County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 11,956. Its county seat is Benson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,949 km² (752 mi²). 1,926 km² (744 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,956 people, 4,353 households, and 2,881 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (16/mi²). There are 4,821 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.67% White, 2.69% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 1.52% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 2.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Swift County has the higest percentage of Pacific Islander natives out of any U.S. county outside Hawaii.

There are 4,353 households out of which 30.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.90% are married couples living together, 6.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% are non-families. 30.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older.
