Steele County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 33,680. Its county seat is Owatonna.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,119 km² (432 mi²). 1,113 km² (430 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.61% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 33,680 people, 12,846 households, and 9,082 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.19% White, 1.07% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.65% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 3.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,846 households out of which 35.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.08.
