Ogemaw County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 21,645. Its county seat is West Branch.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,488 km² (575 mi²). 1,462 km² (564 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.80% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 21,645 people, 8,842 households, and 6,189 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 15,404 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.48% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,842 households out of which 27.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.00% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 6.40% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 27.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 98.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,474, and the median income for a family is $34,988. Males have a median income of $31,003 versus $20,544 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,768. 14.00% of the population and 11.00% of families are below the poverty line.
