The city has a total land area of about 29 square miles and is located about 15 miles east of downtown Dallas. The climate in Mesquite is typical for North Central Texas with hot summers and mild winters.
Mesquite was first settled in 1873 when John H. Gaston established a trading post near the Trinity River. The town was officially incorporated as Mesquite in 1887, taking its name from nearby mesquite trees that were found growing along the Trinity River banks. Over time, Mesquite grew into an important commercial center and it wasn’t until after World War II that it began to develop into a residential community.
Today, Mesquite is governed by a council-manager system where seven elected officials serve as city council members and appoint a professional manager who oversees daily operations of the city government.
