Market entry
Due to the limited capacity of the market, imports are carried out directly, or through state authorities established for this purpose.
No specific documents are required for importation. The customs system is liberal, based on the French system. Import duty ranges from 15-30% depending on the type of goods. The protection of the domestic market is only by tariff rates, also no foreign exchange restrictions are applied.
Forms and conditions of operation on the market
According to cheeroutdoor.com, all business requires registration. The regulations are based on French customs.
Marketing and communication
Promotion in the press is common. Materials in French must be available.
Issues of intellectual property protection
Intellectual property protection in the European sense does not exist in the Comoros. However, the theft of technological software applications as well as the circumvention of patent rights reflect the country’s low technological culture.
Public procurement market
Any public contracts are awarded in the form of tenders. In the case of tenders that are financed by banks or agencies of which the Czech Republic is not a member (e.g. African Development Bank – ADB), it is necessary for the Czech supplier to use for its offer a company based in a country that is a member country of the given bank (agency). Information on published tenders can be obtained on paid internet portals.
Payment terms, payment ethics and resolution of commercial disputes
Within the African region, Comoros is rated as a country with higher risks. The recommended payment terms are the same as in the case of other risky African countries – irrevocable, if possible, confirmed letter of credit (L/C) or, optimally, advance payment. Commercial law is based on continental law. Czech entities are not advised to enter into disputes with local partners. The risks can be considered the very difficult availability of the necessary information, unfamiliarity with the environment, the difficulty of establishing contact with distributors, the very weak purchasing power of the population, the use of French and Arabic.
Visas, fees, specific conditions for traveling to the territory
The visa fee is USD 100 and the visa can be obtained on arrival in the country, at the consulate in Nairobi or in Paris. According to the Honorary Consul in Nairobi, the authorities do not require any vaccinations; however, due to the territory, yellow fever, cholera, jaundice A and B, typhoid fever can be recommended. Despite the improved stability of the political situation, it is recommended to inform yourself about the current situation in the country before your trip.
Employment of citizens from the Czech Republic
Foreigners need a work permit for their activity. Employment of local forces is governed by local labor law.
Fairs and events
Due to the size of the market, no internationally significant fairs are held in the Comoros.
