Alma was established in 1872, when the St. Louis & San Francisco Railway extended its tracks through the area. The town was named after Alma Groves, daughter of one of the railroad’s founders. The railroad brought commerce and industry to Alma, which developed into a thriving community with several businesses and churches. Today, Alma remains a small town with a population of just over 5,400 people.
