Overview of Covington County, Alabama
Covington County, Alabama is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Brigadier General Leonard Covington of Maryland. As of 2000 the population was 37,631. Its county seat is Andalusia.
History
- Covington County was established on December 17, 1821.
- The county was declared a disaster area in September 1979due to damage from Hurricane Frederic.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,704 km² (1,044 mi²). 2,678 km² (1,034 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.96% water.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 37,631 people, 15,640 households, and 10,791 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 18,578 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.19% White, 12.35% Black or African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 15,640 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.10% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.50% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $26,336, and the median income for a family is $33,201. Males have a median income of $27,453 versus $19,640 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,365. 18.40% of the population and 14.10% of families are below the poverty line.
