6 Foods That Should Be Avoided During Pregnancy

The future mom needs to be vigilant about the foods that can cause problems for her health and her baby

A healthy diet during pregnancy is essential to maintain the health of the woman for the development of the baby. So, in addition to giving preference to nutritious food and a balanced menu with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, healthy fats and protein, the future mother must also be vigilant about the foods that can cause problems.

The list of forbidden foods during pregnancy must be indicated by the obstetrician and may vary from woman to woman, but there are some options you should be suspended for pregnant women. Meet now 6 food should be avoided during pregnancy.

1 – Under-Cooked Meat

Never eat any kind of meat that is not well cooked. The raw meats or white or red medium rare, especially pork and lamb, can contain microorganisms that cause toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasmosis can be transmitted congenitally, i.e. from mother to fetus. The effects of the disease for a baby in the womb vary according to the period of pregnancy in which the infection has begun, but can lead to brain damage and blindness in the fetus. The miscarriage is another complication of toxoplasmosis in pregnancy.

2-Raw Eggs

Scratch the menu raw eggs, they can be a source of bacteria that harm the mother and the baby. Foods such as sauces made from raw eggs or little cooked and homemade mayonnaise should also stay out of the pregnant woman. Ideally, cooks them until the yolk and the white are firm to prevent salmonella contamination.

3 – Unpasteurised Milk And Cheeses

Pasteurization is a process which causes the milk is heated to a temperature that kills micro-organisms who can be harmful to health without modifying the characteristics of the food. So before consuming milk and cheese, make sure they are pasteurized.

Another tip is to avoid imported soft cheeses, such as brie, camembert, roquefort, gorgonzola, white cheese and fresh cheese, unless they are made from pasteurized milk.

4-Fish And Seafood

Most of the food from the sea, such as certain fish and shellfish are safe to eat during pregnancy, provided they are well cooked. This recommendation is made because raw, they may be contaminated with bacteria and viruses that cause food poisoning.

The deep-fish, such as tuna and salmon, should be avoided because it contains large high levels of mercury, harmful substance to the nervous system and brain development of the foetus.

Certain types of fish used in sushi should also be avoided because of the large amount of mercury. The canned tuna in light version usually has a smaller amount of mercury than other Tunas, but still should be consumed in moderation.

5-Caffeine

Caffeine is found naturally in coffee, tea, drinks, based on chocolate and some medications. Although most studies show that consumption of caffeine during pregnancy is not related to malformation and abnormalities of the foetus, there are others that show that she may be related to miscarriage during the first trimester of pregnancy, premature birth, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms in newborns.

It also increases the production of stress hormones, causing compression of the uterine blood vessels, which can temporarily reduce the amount of oxygen to the fetus. Therefore, the safest thing to do is avoid the caffeine until the baby is born.

6-Artificial Sweeteners

The ideal is to avoid the use of sweeteners to replace sugar, but always in moderation. Pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding should also avoid saccharin, sucralose and stévia. In case of diabetes, the best option is to use aspartame respecting the daily limit of 40 mg per kg of weight.
